Have you ever heard of black salt in witchcraft? What is it? And why is it an important tool that you can use in your practice?
We live in an energetic world. Everything is energy. And unless you’ve been living under a rock, it’s pretty easy to see just how much heavy, dense, negative energy there is out in the world. It can be easy to be impacted by that toxic boss, the bitter neighbor, the angry coworker. And whether you know it or not, you are being impacted by their energy. And to top it off people can also direct that energy your way intentionally! Anytime someone thinks badly about you, they are sending that energy to you.
So it is important to protect yourself energetically! Black salt is a powerful magical tool used for protection, banishing negativity, and creating boundaries. It is one of the most common ingredients used in protection spells. Black salt is thought to absorb negative energy and can help cleanse your tools as well as your ritual spaces.
Yes, you can buy black salt online. But you can make it just as easily, and ultimately for less money!
How do you make black salt?
You only need a few ingredients:
- Sea salt
- Charcoal
- Black pepper
- Herbs (optional)
- Ashes from burnt intentions (optional)
- Ashes from previous ritual (optional)
To get very simple, you only need three basic ingredients for your black salt. Sea salt, black pepper, and charcoal.
I buy activated charcoal online. It’s relatively inexpensive, and buying the food-grade version allows me to use it for other things as well. You can buy any sea salt you like. It doesn’t have to be an expensive brand. There are plenty of brands right at your local grocery store that will work just fine. The same goes for black pepper.
These three ingredients make a great basic black salt. They are all powerfully protective. To make your basic salt combine 2 parts salt to 1 part mixture of charcoal, black pepper, and any optional ingredients.
Optional ingredients can boost the protection!
Protective herbs
Protective herbs make a great addition to your black salt. Herbs such as rosemary, nettle, sage, lavender, and wormwood are known for their protective properties. And they can enhance the protection of your salt. Safely burn some of the herbs you’d like to add in a fire-safe container. Grind the ash with a mortar and pestle until finely ground. Mix it in with your charcoal and black pepper mixture.
Ashes from burnt intentions
Are you using your black salt for a specific purpose? Write your intention down on a piece of paper. Safely burn it and collect the ashes. Mix the cooled ashes with your salt, charcoal, and black pepper mixture!
Ashes from a previous ritual
Do you have ashes leftover from a previous ritual? You can use them in your black salt. You may need to grind down any chunks in your mortar and pestle. But using ashes from a previous ritual can allow you to cut back on the charcoal, or skip it all together if you have enough ashes.
There are some witches who also use the ashes from burnt incense. I am very sensitive to a lot of incense and cannot use it, so that is why I don’t include it as an option. But you can if you have a lot of incense ash available!
When making your black salt
Ensure your workspace is clean and your intent is clear. Focus on the purpose of the black salt while collecting your ingredients.
As you crush any ash, focus on your intention…be it banishing, protection, or warding off negativity.
Mix your ingredients well and store your black salt in a small jar or container. Keep it in a cool, dry place until you need it.
This should be one of the first ingredients you make for your apothecary! You will use it a lot!
