It is never fun to have laryngitis! Losing your voice and facing trouble speaking can be frustrating and inconvenient especially if you rely on your voice for work or at home. I have been a vocal coach and have worked as a music director for decades. And it’s always inevitable that someone ends up with laryngitis right during the run of a show.
Laryngitis is swelling and inflammation of the vocal cords. The best way to help the voice heal when you have laryngitis is always vocal rest. Talking, singing, and even whispering with laryngitis irritates the vocal cords, increases swelling, and delays healing. So if you have laryngitis it is important to be as quiet as you can be to allow the voice to heal.
I always strive to help singers stay vocally healthy. Although I do not recommend singing when you have laryngitis, it isn’t always an option for them to stay on vocal rest. So this tea recipe has been the saving grace for many singers and cast members who had to sing with laryngitis. I can’t tell you how many shows have been saved because a cast member sipped on this tea throughout the show. It definitely helps to reduce swelling in the vocal cords!
I love the healing power of herbs and natural foods on the body! And if you couple that with some healing intention, then it’ll be even better!
The ingredients you’ll need for your laryngitis tea!
You’ll need a decaffeinated herbal tea. I prefer a rooibos chai tea or apple cinnamon. Both are caffeine-free. The spices used in chai are known for being anti-inflammatory. They are also immune system boosters! If your laryngitis has been caused by a virus, this can help you fight it off! An organic brand is best if possible.
Next, you’ll want some honey. I love buying local honey from beekeepers in my area. There is just something about supporting those beekeepers in the area. Most are small businesses. There are also some who believe that using local honey can be beneficial for seasonal allergies. So there’s that too.
Ginger is highly recommended to help with laryngitis. It has been shown to soothe the mucous membranes of the larynx when they’re inflamed. Not only can ginger reduce swelling and inflammation, but it can help reduce pain. All make for a happier throat!
Finally, you’ll need some cayenne pepper. Cayenne is a powerful anti-inflammatory and pain reducer and can significantly help with any swelling in the vocal cords. The cayenne doesn’t provide any flavor….just heat. And your mouth will adjust to that heat after a while.
If you have laryngitis I recommend sipping on cups of this tea throughout the day. This will give you more consistent inflammation and pain reduction.
And don’t forget to set an intention before you drink this tea! Set an intention for healing and a clear voice to use magic to strengthen the power of your laryngitis tea!
